Paper liners make an air fryer basket easier to clean, and they carry one safety instruction that matters more than everything else on the packet.
Never Preheat With an Empty Liner
The rule, stated first because it is the one that causes fires.
An air fryer is a small convection oven with a powerful fan. A sheet of paper with nothing on it is light enough to be lifted by that airflow and blown against the heating element, where it ignites.
A liner goes in with the food already on it, weighing it down, and never during a preheat cycle with an empty basket.
The Other Rules
- The food’s weight must hold the liner down for the whole cycle
- The liner must not touch the heating element at any point
- Do not use one larger than the basket, or fold it up the sides
- Do not cover the perforations entirely if the design has them
- Follow the appliance manufacturer’s guidance, which overrides everything
Liners sold sized to specific basket dimensions, of the kind at vitever.net, exist because a sheet cut to fit is less likely to lift or contact the element than one trimmed at home.
Airflow Is How It Cooks
The reason liners have holes. An air fryer works by moving hot air rapidly around the food, and a solid barrier under the food blocks that circulation.
The result is food that steams underneath rather than crisping, which defeats the point of the appliance.
Perforated liners are a compromise between cleaning and cooking, and they are not free.
Some Appliances Say No
Worth checking before buying a pack. Some manufacturers advise against liners entirely, on the grounds of airflow or fire risk.
The manual is the authority. A liner is not worth voiding a warranty or ignoring an explicit instruction.
Never Use Ordinary Baking Paper Loose
The same lifting problem, without the sizing. Loose paper in a fan oven at high temperature is exactly the failure described above.
The same applies to kitchen paper, which is not designed for oven temperatures at all.
Foil Has Its Own Issues
It blocks airflow completely and can contact the element. Acidic foods react with it. It is not a better substitute.
Clean the Appliance Anyway
Grease accumulates on the element and in the housing regardless of liners, and accumulated grease is itself a fire risk.
Regular cleaning of the whole unit matters more than protecting the basket.
Never Leave It Unattended
The general rule for anything cooking at high temperature.
